Mobile Websites

Websites for Mobile

Apps versus Mobile websites – do you know the difference? Both are important, both have a place. What do they offer and which one is for you?

Mobile is the fastest growing online space. As millions worldwide migrate to smartphones, the number of people downloading apps and browsing the web on their smartphone is growing very, very rapidly.

What is an "App"

An "app" is a software written in the language of a mobile phone (different for Android and Apple)

- Apps can work offline
- Apps can be launched in a single step
- Apps can use features of the phone that websites cannot
- Apps are available in an App Store
- App are not found directly on the web, they require more "investment" for a customer to download it. But if they do, they create more of a bond.

What is a Mobile Website

- A mobile website is just a website that has been optimized for mobile browsing.
- It can be reached through a phone's web browser directly.
- One mobile site can work on any mobile platform
- It is generally faster and cheaper to develop a mobile site, usually it is a 'version' of your primary website.
- Customers can google you and land on your mobile site

Web sites are a great way to attract new business - apps are a great way to keep them! Apps give your business a competitive edge - reaching people through an app is an exciting new way to communicate. Over 80% of new phones sold in the UK in 2013 are expected to be smartphones and apps are the things smartphone owners want. If your customers have smartphones, having your app their phone will  want give you a line of communication that you didn't have before and give you an edge on your competitors.

10 things to consider

Ten things to consider when building a website

Having a clear understanding of the processes involved in creating a successful website will maximise your chances of achieving your aims.

There's a lot to consider when building a business website, either for Smartphones or for PC's – here are 10 things to think about:

1) Your aspirations for a web site

It is worth thinking about why you want a web-site and what you expect to achieve with it. It could be that you want to build awareness of your business in the local area, or that you want to attract new customers, or you want to distinguish yourself from your competition. Being clear on your aims makes it easier to deliver something that delivers to them.

2) Understand your audience

Think about who you are building this site for.

Who do you believe will looking for your site and what do you think they will want to do when they get there?

Who do you want your site to appeal to?

Are you hoping to attract any specific groups?

3) Creating a Website

Once you understand what you want from a website and who it is for, you can start to think about how to have it created. You can build the website yourself. It is a learning curve – to achieve good results takes experience and expertise, which is where working with a web design and development company is a safer option compared to building your website yourself. It will usually yield better results and in a shorter period of time. They will also be able to advise you on the best domain name to choose, where to host the site, manage it for you after it is built

4) Pick a name

A Top Level Domain (TLD) is registered with a Domain Registrar, who manage it's presence and make sure nobody else can use it. To register a domain name, you have to choose your preferred name and find out if is already in use. The name you choose must be:unique – for example, you can't register 'bbc.co.uk' as it already belongs to someone else. There are also restrictions on which (TLDs) you can register for – the part of the name on the right (eg .com or .co.uk). For example, you often can't use a sector-specific TLD if your business isn't a member of that sector. Your web site developers usually do all of this for you as part of the service.

5) Presentation

Your website is an extension of you or your business. Yes, it has to look nice, but it must also put across the right message, conveyed clearly and simply and it has to appeal to each segment of your audience.

Remember your web presence needs to look right on all the different devices your users will be using – i.e. Desktops, Laptops, Smartphones, Tablets. Over 70% of phones sold now are Smartphones and users use their Smartphone to surf the Internet. Aim to have your users impressed by your site no matter how they view it.

6) Usability

The way information is organised on your website will make a considerable difference to the customer experience. Content needs to be logically grouped and well presented. It needs to also consider your audience and why they'll be visiting your website. If your visitors can't use your website, they will use somebody else's.

7) Content

The content of your website includes the text, images, plus maybe rich media content like audio files or videos. Content is the very core of the message your website is making and is one of the most important aspects of any website, as content is how your site will communicate with visitors and will affect your position on search engines. The content is yours, but whoever makes your website will help you shape it and make it suitable for your site.

8) Keep it up to date

One of the pitfalls of websites is that once they are built, people don't update them. There are two reasons for this – one is that that it is a technical challenge and they do don't know how to do it themselves. The other reason is that they simply don't think it is necessary. The technology problem can be overcome by using a Content Management System (CMS). This means that the site is constructed in such a way that making changes can be as easy as filling in a form.

9) E-commerce

If you want to use your website to sell directly to the public, you will need to build in e-commerce functionality. This is where a solution that allows you to easily change prices and products and fits in with existing regulations is a must.

10) SEO

Search Engine Optimisation is all about helping the search engines (e.g. Google) to find you. Include the best keywords at strategic points in your content helps to achieve good positions in search engine results.
